By reading this article I really understood why most women took to the streets and doing prostitution because it was really like the only way women at least could make a decent amount of money to take care of themselves as well their families. Just reading some women got caught up in the lifestyle just trying to want to get better and start their own business with the money since job during that time was so awful and underpay especially for women. And just reading about Jack the Ripper was crazy but interesting at the same time. That man was really sick in so many ways if you ask me. I need some research online about prostitution and read where they thought women having their cycle was a mad person disease .
The Lady of Shalott
I think real artists struggle in the real world because they think so much differently than regular people. Most artists has different ways of looking at the world and different ways of thinking. At times other people do not know how to look at artists and think they are weird. I think artists can balance living in the real world by having people in their lives that knows how to deal with them and knows that they are good people. Once they know that I think that they would be able to make it in the world due to the love they know that they do have. The poem, ” The Lady of Shalott” she was looking for the life she felt like she did not get to have especially love and she wanted it no matter the circumstances of her actions. In the poem she dies trying to find the love she was not used to ever having in her life.
Working Conditions In Victorian England For Lower Class!
Just by reading the short article I realize how awful it was for the poor back in those days. I also realize that conductors during the Victorian Era is pretty much was just a taxi service like in todays time. Pretty much taxi drivers still work early mornings and late nights just like the conductors were doing back then, But to continue to read about the workshops during that time and the awful working conditions and under pay really made me mad but I know that the people then had to make money some kind of way to support themselves as well their families. At least now the pay has gotten much better even though some may still say the pay could be better especially for the kind of work most factories be doing. Factories is pretty much just workshops or sweatshops in todays time. The good thing about it now is that the working conditions is much better and the workers has a place to go to report anything that is not state regulations. And kids can no longer be forced into working now and have the chance to get the proper education. But I do think that major companies are taking jobs over seas trying to save money because they can pay lesser money to the workers or possibly do not have to offer benefits or overtime to the workers.
The Image I chose
The image that I felt some emotion towards to was the photo named,” The Crawlers” of the homeless elderly looking lady with the baby on the street. The image was taken in London, the lady was wealthy at one point but the husband gamble up all of their money before he died and left her without any money and eventually living on the streets. The term Crawlers is short for beggars on the streets in London. The photo and interview was taken by John Thomas. The photo bothered me and captured my attention because of the actions of her deceased husband left her and the baby without any help or not a simple place for and their child to live. To see the hurt in the lady eyes made me feel so sad for her. Just to think about during that time women really did not have much of a choice but to let their husbands take care of them, and if they married a man such as the lady in the photo did , things could end up terrible for her and the kids. Just thought of how she once was living amongst the wealthy and probably looked down upon the Crawlers in the streets, but ended up becoming one herself with her child.
What I learned about the Victorians!
I was so surprised how so many things in this time period all comes from something dealing with the Victorians Era. Such as the white wedding dress all started from Queen Victoria. But it was also interesting to see how during those times it was so judge mental just by wealth, race, or plain out sexuality and people was considered to be less important or shunned from the community. It is clear to see that those things still go on in this days of time. It is like that the wealthy still feel more entitled in today times even though they are just as much as human as the lower class. I was surprised to learn to some much about Queen Victoria and how even though she was a woman during that era she still di not allow herself to be walked all over and forced out of her throne.
Victorian Olympics
The person I chose to do my Kate Webster. Kate Webster was the most hated woman especially a murderer of the Victorian Era. She was known for the killing of Julia Martha. Kate Webster was 30 years old and was not very rich and came from a very shady background as well she had many incidents with the law. Kate Webster was an Ireland woman. Julia Martha hired Kate as a maid to clean her home, not knowing that shortly Kate would kill her. The murder became so famous that it was known as the Richmond Murder. From doing some research it was mentioned that Julia did not care for the way Kate did her job which resulted into the two of them having major issues and it ultimately ended with Kate being fired. Days later Kate killed Julia is such a terrible , nasty way. Kate was drunk the last day on the job which turned into a fight between her and Julia before she was heading out for church and started back once she was back home. Kate pushed Julia down the stairs and chocked her until she died. She then set a pot to boiled and placed of Julia body into it trying to dispose of it as well chopping her up in many small parts, which she threw in the River Thames. The nasty part of this has to be the fact that Kate was selling Julia body fat to people in the streets. She also was acting as she was Julia for at least 2 weeks before anybody noticed anything. With the greed of Kate, is what truly got her caught because she started trying to sell Julia things and that is what caused the suspicion from neighbors. By that happening Kate ran off back to her hometown until she was caught and forced back to England to faced the music of her crime. The murder became so well known during the Victorian Era because of the fact Kate was the help and Julia was so wealthy and since Kate was a woman which caused the wealthy people of England to be furious. Kate finally admitted to the murder of Julia right before her execution by hanging.
